Owners opinions:
OpinionNot so good EOS 550D. Be careful. I just looked at the review of the Canon EOS 550D camera where dpreview list that the camera has a Raw image format, in fact two Raw settings. NOT SO!!!! It seems that’s what Canon want you to think. What you actually get is a badly Jpeged image, IT IS NOT RAW. This seems to be a blatant lie or is a least deceptive, there is no way you can get a raw image off the 550D. Canon’s own literature (if you can find it) will tell you all image settings are set to Jpeg as the camera’s default – Canon states on a hard to find PDF document (and not anywhere in the EOS 550D camera instruction manual): ‘The camera’s factory default configuration is set to deliver immediately-usable JPEG images without need for additional menu settings. Picture Style presets applied to a RAW image can be revised with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software.’. ‘Revised’, what does that mean? It doesn’t mean you can get a Raw image. If you set the camera to Raw and look at a supposed Raw image in Digital Photo Professional it will be labeled as Raw and will have the file extension .CS4. From my experience this is utter bull shit. When you take it into Photoshop you will see that what you end up with is a Tiff file that has been through a Jpeg process (or probably more correctly, a Jpeg image converted into a Tiff file which had a .CS4 extension to make it look like it was a Raw image, but then again how do you know what has happened). The Tiff image is so badly Jpeged that you will get a better image quality with the camera set at the highest level Jpeg. If anyone can tell me how I can get a Raw image, a genuine, unaffected image that came straight off the sensor in a format that Photoshop can read, I will be all ears. Please, please, prove me wrong. I bought an EOS 550D just a few days ago and will be returning it for a refund. The rest of the camera seems fine. David |
ProblemsBe careful, from what I can tell, and nobody else has shown me otherwise, there is no accessible Raw images available from a Canon EOS 550D camera, only Jpeg. The Raw camera setting is bogus. Maybe there is a plug in or an update coming that will change that. |
